Syracuse University SUSTAIN

Here’s the Story

Co-founder of Business for Good, Ed Mitzen, is a Syracuse alumnus, and was looking for ways to give back to his alma mater. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degree continuation rates for underrepresented students have always been disproportionately low. The SUSTAIN program was developed to provide support and resources to first-generation students, female students, and students of color, who are pursuing STEM degrees.

Giving Back

Business for Good donated ten million dollars over the course of ten years to allow SUSTAIN to exit its grant-funded pilot phase and pursue endowment funding. This support is helping to diversify the next generation of STEM leaders, which is a predominantly white and male-dominated space. The SUSTAIN program has already seen STEM degree continuation rates for underrepresented students rise from roughly 30% to more than 90%. With added support and resources for these underserved students, they are now able to confidently walk the halls at school and feel better prepared as they enter the workforce.

Moving Forward

Business for Good remains engaged with program leaders, and Ed Mitzen gives regular guest lectures at the University to invigorate and inspire the next generation.
